Challenge
Killybegs Harbour Centre in County Donegal, Ireland, is a historically significant deep-water harbor that has served as a market and seaport town since the seventeenth century. In 2022, the center received funding of over €9 million to improve its infrastructure, services, and sustainability. The upgrade plan consists of several key enhancements, including advancing the Smooth Point Pier extension implementing water control and energy-saving measures, upgrading the Blackrock & Landing Pier piles, installing Landing Pier fendering, and constructing the Small Craft Harbour Service Building. The new 120 meters of additional quay space is under a separate contract with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine/Doran Consulting/Sorensen’s.
These upgrades aim to enhance the harbor’s capacity, efficiency, and environmental impact while preserving its historical significance.
Our role
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) appointed Ayesa, to supervise the addition of an HDPE (high-density polyethylene) jacket to the Blackrock & Landing Pier piles, (as a protective measure against corrosion). Contractor – Sorensens.
In addition, Ayesa is supervising the construction of the new Shipyard Storage Shed and the Harbour Masters Storage Shed. We are ensuring the contractor completes to the highest standards the installation of 38 new ODEX piles, reinforced concrete ground beams, reinforced concrete floor slab, and the structural steel building frame and cladding. Under the ODEX piling supervision, our Resident Engineer is using a robotic total station onsite, to ensure that piles are accurately positioned according to the plans. Contractor: McDermott Trearty Construction.
As part of our supervisory services, we are delivering weekly progress reports to DAFM, attending monthly progress meetings, maintaining day-to-day communication with the contractor, and recording daily diary entries of labour, plant, and works carried out.
Value add
Ayesa ensures that all construction activities meet the highest standards: Our experience in supervising the addition of an HDPE jacket to the Blackrock & Landing Pier piles (ensures that the protective measure against corrosion is implemented effectively) reducing the need for future maintenance and repairs. As a supervisory entity, by closely monitoring the installation of 38 new ODEX piles, reinforced concrete ground beams, reinforced concrete floor slab, and the structural steel building frame and cladding, we verify that the work is carried out according to the project specifications. Our focus on quality assurance helps to deliver a robust and reliable harbor infrastructure.
Effective project management: Ayesa facilitates smooth communication between the contractors and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM). By maintaining day-to-day communication, delivering progress reports, and attending monthly progress meetings, they keep all stakeholders informed about the project’s status and address any issues or concerns promptly. This streamlined project management approach helps to ensure that the upgrade progresses efficiently and stays on schedule.
Comprehensive documentation: Ayesa’s daily diary entries, which record labor, plant, and work carried out, provide a detailed account of the construction activities. This documentation serves as an essential reference for project tracking, compliance, and future maintenance purposes. It also aids in addressing any potential disputes or claims that may arise during or after the project’s completion.
