Engineering and the environment

Rivers are an extremely important feature of our world for both biodiversity and society as a whole. In order to properly manage these natural resources, in-depth knowledge of how they are made up and work is essential. At Ayesa, we have extensive experience in analysing the various components of the water cycle. Indeed, we are somewhat of an authority when it comes to the most important aspects of water for engineering and architecture, including climatology, extreme events such as floods and droughts, and sedimentology.

We have numerous hydroinformatics modelling programmes integrated with GIS for advanced map making and statistical time series analysis. This technology allows us to simulate and gauge all necessary hydrological and hydraulic components. We then use the results of these simulations to develop measures designed to maintain and bring about the return of good river conditions whilst minimising the risk of flooding and enhancing cultural heritage. Another objective in this area is to ensure the proper use of rivers through a rational strategy, as well as drive the sustainable development of the natural environment by way of a holistic approach. Our work in this field respects all applicable national and international laws and regulations.

Flood risk assessments and models
We draw on our extensive expertise in advanced IT methodologies and tools to carry out work in hydrology, hydraulics and geomorphology, as well as create one-dimensional and two-dimensional hydrodynamic models. These areas deal with the delimitation of public waters and flood-prone areas, as well as the drafting of rules for operating dams, proposals for classification based on potential risk of dam failure, and emergency plans..
Restoring biodiversity and creating healthy aquatic ecosystems
We undertake restoration projects with the aim of reinstating natural processes to restore biodiversity and create healthy aquatic ecosystems in rivers and wetlands. To do this, we make use of their dynamics and resilience, and ensure that they are used in a way which is compatible with their natural state. Following a conservative approach, we use techniques which allow us to meet all established objectives whilst complying with applicable laws and regulations. Public participation and the effective dissemination of information are two cornerstones of our projects.
Specific studies for designing solutions
We assess natural and altered water resources, as well as environmental flows, droughts and floods involving different return periods. We also analyse the amount of sediment as well as spectral indices for environmental features of interest obtained from satellite images (Sentinel, Landsat, etc.). These studies provide us with the information needed to design solutions that are optimal, sustainable and resilient in the face of a changing climate.
Impact of climate change
At Ayesa, we create action plans for mitigating the effects of climate change. To do this, we take different possible scenarios resulting from climate change and analyse their effects in detail. We identify threats and look at existing vulnerabilities in order to assess the ability of a particular water resource to adapt to changing conditions. Once the risk has been assessed, we select and prioritise the most effective mitigation and adaptation measures in response to the effects of climate change.
