Revolutionizing Workplace Safety: VR Training Solution for Enel Chile
The solution, which uses 3D modelling and texturing to make the user experience as realistic as possible, allows staff to receive training in a safe environment.
Ayesa, a global provider of technology and engineering services, has developed an immersive virtual reality solution for Enel Chile which simulates real-life scenarios. This allows staff to receive training without the risk of suffering an accident.
VR training has transformed professional development, allowing personalised training to be provided in an efficient and flexible manner through digital platforms. This can cover anything from technical skills to leadership and management. Users are able to gain experience in a controlled environment and repeat tasks as many times as they need. In addition to offering a safe and effective way of gaining practical skills, these kinds of solutions also reduce costs and increase productivity and innovation.
Enel Chile was looking to create a safe environment where its staff could learn how to correctly dig in public spaces as well as cut and restore power. This includes general knowledge on how to prepare the ground and correctly dig, check that the choices made by workmen are correct and gauge the risk of gas, water and electricity infrastructure being damaged.
The company decided to entrust Ayesa to create its VR training environment based on its significant experience in developing these kinds of solutions for utilities. The big benefit these solutions offer is that staff are able to become proficient at carrying out tasks in a safe environment before doing them in the field, thereby minimising the risk of accidents occurring.
Jesús Ortega, Head of Enel Distribution Projects in Spain and Latin America at Ayesa, explains: ‘3D modelling and texturing techniques have been used to create a user experience that is as realistic as possible. A 3D engine has also been used to include various interactive and realistic elements when tasks are being out. The solution also features a series of short quizzes to test the user’s knowledge on signs relating to workplace safety’.
Ayesa has become a go-to technology partner for utilities across the globe. The VR training environment developed for Enel Chile uses a number of different technologies, such as Unity, Unreal, Android and iOS; the development platforms Unity 3D, Unreal Engine, Blender 3D and Substance Painter; and the HTC VIVE Pro Eye and Meta Quest 1/2/Pro headsets. In terms of the methodology used, the decision was made to opt for Hybrid Agile/Waterfall.
