Ayesa wins a contract to transform El Prat Airport’s Terminal 1 in Barcelona
Spain’s airport operator is set to invest EUR 700 million in the megaproject, which will increase its capacity and optimise the passenger experience.
AENA is set to transform Terminal 1 at El Prat Airport in Barcelona. The aim is to increase its capacity, improve its facilities and optimise the experience it offers passengers. As part of the 700-million-euro project, one the biggest ever undertaken by Spain’s airport operator, Ayesa has been awarded a contract valued at EUR 9.1 million. This will see the company head a consortium that includes Viarium Ingeniería and One Works Spa.
Terminal 1, which opened in 2009, can handle up to 55 million passengers a year and is used by the world’s leading airlines. The expansion is expected to be completed between 2027 and 2031.
Ayesa’s Director of Airports, Manuel Sauca, explains how all floors of the terminal building are set to be transformed, with its check-in, baggage reclaim and security areas being expanded.
The project will also include the demolition of the control tower, the renovation and expansion of the shopping area, changes to roads used to access the airport, and the further integration of the terminal’s intermodal transport hub.
To create more space, the main facade will be moved 38 meters to the west over the existing access roads, and will extend across the front of the apron, where it will connect with the piers. To allow for the transformation of the terminal’s three floors, the roads leading to the departures area will be relocated over the intermodal plaza.
According to preliminary feasibility studies, 70,000 m2 will be added to the terminal, and more than 48,000 m2 of the existing structure will undergo renovation.
Furthermore, a new power plant will be built and the existing one will be expanded. A further thermal plant will also be added and the HVAC system at the building housing the terminal’s existing thermal plant will be upgraded.
‘Once again, Ayesa will be part of an emblematic airport project in Spain, following its involvement in other major initiatives such as the new T123 complex and the expansion of T4/T4S at Madrid Barajas Airport,’ adds Sauca.
