Clifton Marsh Landfill
- Client: SITA Suez UK
- Date: 2000 - ongoing
- Location: Clifton Marsh, United Kingdom
- Sector: Water and the Environment
- Subsector: Waste Management
Challenge
Clifton Marsh Landfill required a comprehensive approach to waste management services, including the design and supervision of construction materials, groundwater dewatering, and installation of landfill systems. The site presented challenges such as the need for a 17 m deep Bentonite cut-off wall, effective groundwater management, and the integration of environmental risk assessments into the design process. Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and maintaining the integrity of the landfill’s infrastructure were critical aspects of the project.
Our role
Ayesa was appointed to provide a range of waste management services at Clifton Marsh Landfill. Our role included:
- Site investigations and design of a quarry for construction materials.
- Design and supervision of a 2 km, 17 m deep Bentonite cut-off wall installation.
- Multilevel wellpoint dewatering of groundwater.
- Landfill basal liner and capping design using composite geosynthetic and mineral liners.
- Risk-based selection of lining and capping materials, supported by quantitative groundwater, ground gas, and stability risk assessments.
- Preparation of PPC (Pollution Prevention and Control) permit applications.
- Preparation of contract specifications, full tendering, and procurement support.
- Construction supervision and quality assurance for all landfill-related works.
Additionally, our team provided expertise in:
- Leachate lagoon design.
- Gas well design and installation supervision.
- Retro-drilling of leachate wells.
- Flood risk assessment and design of a surface water control system.
- Design and installation of over 30 external groundwater and ground gas monitoring wells, along with the development of an environmental monitoring programme.
The site is now 90% capped, with all leachate and gas collection systems designed by our team, ensuring long-term environmental safety and compliance.
Value added
Ayesa’s comprehensive approach to the Clifton Marsh Landfill project ensured that all aspects of the landfill’s infrastructure were designed and implemented to the highest standards. Our expertise in risk-based design, environmental monitoring, and construction supervision provided robust solutions that addressed the site’s unique challenges. The successful installation of the Bentonite cut-off wall, effective groundwater management systems, and carefully selected capping materials have significantly enhanced the landfill’s operational efficiency and environmental protection measures.
