Ayesa Digital will enable early detection of frailty and dependency in older adults using AI

Leading the BIZIA R&D project, which aims to establish a revolutionary healthcare model based on disruptive technologies.

Ayesa Digital is leading an R&D project supported by the SPRI Group —the Basque Agency for Business Development— through the HAZITEK Programme for the promotion of business R&D in the Basque Country. The initiative seeks to foster an intelligent digital ecosystem to transform the current care model. BIZIA (Basque Intelligent Healthcare & Social Assistance), promoted by a multidisciplinary consortium of companies and scientific stakeholders from the Basque Country, was created with a clear purpose: to position itself at the forefront of digital health and social care in Europe.

Population ageing is a major challenge for modern societies and calls for a shift in care models, supported by technological solutions that enhance diagnosis and disease prevention, as well as efficiency in the management of health and social care resources. BIZIA addresses this challenge by enabling early detection of frailty and dependency—both physical and cognitive—among older adults.

Through the application of advanced federated data-sharing techniques, artificial intelligence and IoT-based sensing technologies, the system will be able to securely and ethically collect, digitise and analyse health and social data. This will make it possible to identify early signs of deterioration, anticipate risk situations and support decision-making by healthcare and social care professionals.

BIZIA will drive the transition towards a more personalised, predictive, preventive and person-centred care model, one of the strategic pillars of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Plan 2030 (PCTI 2030). In addition, it will contribute to the Basque strategy for Personalised Health and Healthy Ageing, aligning with European initiatives such as GAIA-X and the European Health Data Space (EHDS) for the responsible and federated use of health data.

Technological leadership and a comprehensive vision

The consortium led by Ayesa includes Datua, Airlan Industrial, Impulso Cognitivo, Bexreal, Gogoa, Inviza, Movex and the San Ignacio Care Home, together with the technology centres Tekniker Foundation, Mondragon Unibertsitatea and I3B, all members of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network (RVCTI).

As the consortium leader, Ayesa Digital coordinates the project’s overall strategy and plays a key role in technological development. Its work focuses on designing the data ecosystem architecture, integrating explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) models, and ensuring interoperability and cybersecurity within health and social care environments.

For Ayesa Digital, BIZIA represents a strategic opportunity to consolidate its position as a leader in digital solutions for the health and social care sector. The company contributes its expertise in artificial intelligence, big data, interoperability and critical data management, opening up new business lines in digital health and wellbeing.

“This project embodies Ayesa’s commitment to technological innovation in the service of people,” emphasises Itziar Cuenca, R&D Director at the Ayesa Group. “Our goal is for technology not only to improve system efficiency, but also to contribute to a more human, accessible and sustainable care model”.
