Natura 2000 Study for the High-Speed Rail Link between Seville and Huelva

The informative study for the high-speed rail link between Seville and Huelva included six different routing options, between kilometres 94.2 and 96.5 km. The aim was to achieve the greatest possible length on straight sections and large curve radii in order to allow trains to travel up to 350 km/hour.

The work carried out by Ayesa included drafting a study to assess the impact on areas belonging to the Natura 2000 network, such as the Bajo Guadalquivir, the Rio Tinto and Guadiamar River ecological corridor, as well as the marshland and banks of the Rio Tinto.

This involved mapping habitats and species by way of fieldwork and assessing the impact on the areas in question, as well as drafting mitigating measures and producing a monitoring plan for each area.

Particularly noteworthy within the context of this project were the distribution of species of interest at a European level, the effect of viaducts, the protection of rare species during their mating and breeding season, the barrier effect for the lynx and the replanting of the affected areas.
