Electrification of the Atocha-Chamartín railway connection

The project contemplates the necessary installations for the electrification of the railway connection between the stations of Atocha and Chamartín (Madrid). The precise actions for the integration of the energy remote control in the existing control and operation centre are also defined.

The forecast of use of the Atocha complex in 2020 foresees a distribution of passengers between the east, south and northeast corridors in Madrid terminals of 24 million in Atocha and 10 million from the new configuration of the Chamartín complex, through this new tunnel, with which the total capacity will increase to 34 million passengers.

The construction of this new double-track railway tunnel connects the high-speed lines serving the main Spanish corridors between the two stations of Atocha and Chamartín, with the following main advantages:

  • Improving accessibility.
  • Advancements in Sustainability.
  • Greater Quality of Service and Comfort for Users.
  • Decongestion of the city of Madrid.

Installations and Equipment:

  • Electrification via rigid catenary powered at 2x25 kV.
  • Electrification of the temporary tunnel of the future station in the new railway complex of Atocha.
  • Design of the new intermediate self-transformation centre located in the vicinity of the Chamartín station.
  • Energy Remote Control System.
