Bridges and structures

Ibn Firnas Bridge

The bridge is part of a road that runs six miles in length along the west of Cordoba.

Along the stretch three links are projected to allow the connection between N-437, A-45 and A-4, giving access to downtown, the airport in Cordoba, Polígono Industrial Amargacena and macrosilo of Valchillón, Villaseca, etc.

The stretch of road has a total of ten structures; among which the Ibn Firnas Bridge stands that corresponds to the trace pass over the Guadalquivir River. Its design marks a total bridge length of 365 meters supporting two three-lane roads in each direction.

With this layout, we achieve a spatial structure, a 3D object that permits within its interior the road circulation that distinguishes the urban space over the Guadalquivir.

In the bridge axis, each pair of arches mixes together melting into one structure that goes all the way to the central pillar. The two mixed extremes tie together through a counter-arch which gives a structural continuity and where a metallic abstract sculpture hangs; which symbolizes the figure of Engineer Firnás who was the first man in history that flew with artificial wings.
