Tunnels and Underground Spaces

What lies beneath – Mitigating uncertainty and risks below ground

Our team of geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, engineering geologists, and civil engineers deliver comprehensive solutions for tunnelling, deep shafts, basements, temporary works, and retaining walls across multiple terrain.  At Ayesa, we collaborate with public and private sector entities, metro and rail operators, and support major contractors with design and build services.

Meeting Challenges

Ayesa is proud to employ some of the world’s leading tunnellers and ground engineers. Whether dealing with large tunnels or smaller underground spaces and deep basements, challenges arise from ground and soil type, length and depth, water, and seismic activity and constricted, busy urban environments. Our tunnelling expertise spans multiple sectors, including rail, metro, light rapid transit, roads, motorways, highways, water and wastewater systems, storm water management, utility networks, and deep basements and shafts in 23 countries around the world.

Our geotechnical services are a crucial part of part of civil projects

Our expertise spans over 907 kilometres in feasibility studies, strategically mapping out the viability and groundwork for projects of all complexities. In detailed design, we’ve meticulously crafted solutions across 250+ kilometres, ensuring every aspect aligns with precision and functionality.

Tunnelling Techniques For Diverse Projects

Ayesa excels in a range of tunneling techniques, having designed nearly 500 km of tunnels. Our expertise includes key construction methods: 190 km using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), 213 km with the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), and 85 km through Cut and Cover (C&C). We tailor tunnels from 3 to 14 meters in diameter with TBM and NATM methods, delivering precise and effective solutions for diverse project requirements.

Expertise and Capabilities

Our design teams apply best practices, including numerical modeling, to develop effective plans and proactively address potential issues that could cause delays or extra costs. We focus on accurately predicting and managing ground movement during tunneling and designing ground improvements. We use advanced modeling to enhance soil-structure interactions and groundwater management. Our innovative solutions, such as sprayed concrete lining (SCL), segmental lining, and trenchless tunneling methods, ensure efficient construction. Additionally, our expertise in Deep Diaphragm Wall Construction (DDC) and Value Engineering (VE) enables us to provide customized solutions for projects around the world. Our “out of box” sustainable thinking has resulted in numerous shortlisted projects in the Ground Engineering Awards (UK). In the UK, we are a Top 10 Ground Engineering Consultant, trusted by Rail operators and contractors for our agile and flexible solutions and dedication to delivering on programme.
