Energy Storage

Strategic storage solutions

Energy storage is essential for a sustainable energy future: It helps balance short-term fluctuations, provides operating reserves, and maintains grid stability. Additionally, it supports long-term storage and overall grid functionality.

At Ayesa, we use our deep knowledge of transmission, distribution networks, and energy storage solutions to guide clients in developing large-scale energy storage projects. Our approach covers all aspects—technical, financial, economic, and commercial—ensuring effective opportunity evaluation and risk management.

In-house Experts

Our team of specialists, skilled in distribution grid electrical engineering, power electronics, controls, system commercialisation, and energy economics, leads our energy storage and demand-side management projects. We combine extensive engineering experience in the renewable sector with advanced AI technologies for storage operations, covering the entire project value chain. We have successfully implemented technologies for over 300 MWh of storage.

Ayesa has been actively involved in a range of energy storage technologies globally, including:

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Rechargeable batteries that store energy from variable sources and discharge it as needed to balance the electrical grid, provide backup power, and enhance grid stability. Ayesa has delivered circa 20 projects with BESS solutions around the world.

Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES): A well-established method where water is pumped to a higher elevation during low-demand periods and released to generate electricity during peak demand. Its potential is growing as countries seek to improve energy resilience and maximize renewable energy use.

Thermal Storage: This category includes technologies like salt thermal storage and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP), which store energy in thermal form for later use.

Hydrogen Electrolyzers: Devices that use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, with hydrogen stored for energy applications.

BESS ENEL X

In the BESS ENEL X Project, Ayesa set new standards in energy storage and grid management by integrating advanced technology into one of Australia’s largest photovoltaic (PV) plants. The project features two major solar installations: X1 with 137 MWdc (megawatts direct current) and X2 with an additional 100 MW. Ayesa enhanced X1’s efficiency by adding a 14 MW/14 MWh (megawatt-hours) battery energy storage system (BESS). This system enables energy shifting and arbitrage by charging during low wholesale prices and discharging when prices rise, ensuring cost savings and maximizing returns. It also maintains grid stability by balancing supply and demand and reduces costs associated with power imbalances, boosting overall grid reliability.

The Innovative Role Ayesa plays in Energy Storage

GridPilot: (EU Funded Project) An aggregation platform designed to monitor and operate distributed energy resources, including electromobility. Developed with open principles and cloud-agnostic microservices, GridPilot offers high scalability, flexibility and interoperability

Islander: developed by Ayesa as part of an EU initiative to decarbonize islands, features a comprehensive platform designed to transform energy use on isolated communities. It encompasses the **design, development, and deployment** of energy communities, including **district heating** systems utilizing seawater to serve 100 dwellings. The project integrates **photovoltaic installations and batteries** in buildings and homes, alongside **smart street lighting** with storage. It also includes **electric vehicle charging stations** and **hydrogen-based energy storage** for seasonal needs. Additionally, the project features **large-scale battery storage** to enhance grid regulation and support high levels of renewable energy. A demand management application with incentives engages 5,500 volunteers, further advancing energy efficiency and sustainability.

SuperPV: The SuperPV project enhances the efficiency and operation of photovoltaic (PV) generation facilities through advanced technologies. It employs Digital Twin Technology to create a machine learning-based digital replica of the PV system. Prediction Algorithms forecast dirt accumulation on panels based on weather conditions, while Optimization Algorithms recommend cleaning schedules to reduce dirt-related losses and operational costs. The system also includes Automatic Fault Detection to identify and address issues in real-time and Asset Management using Building Information Modeling (BIM) to streamline overall management and maintenance.

Electromobility Experience

Ayesa brings over 12 years of expertise in developing and managing technology for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and electromobility services. We’re currently collaborating with Enel on developing a new platform to enhance EV charging infrastructure.
