The Pillars of Seville Cathedral

In spring 1999, the City Council entrusted Ayesa to carry out an analysis of the pathologies of Seville Cathedral. It was recommended that the extent and conditions of the foundations be checked, that the analysis include not only the shafts of the pillars but also the vaults, that the geometry and stability of the cathedral's structure be studied, that information on similar pathologies be gathered, that affected pillars be shored and that solutions be looked into.

A preliminary report was drafted and then the projects to shore and band pillars 4C and 5C were drawn up. Research and auscultation work was also carried out on the pillars.

Using the information obtained, a project to replace pillars 4C and 5C in the cathedral was drafted.

 

Work began in November 2006 and was completed in August 2009. The project was carried out alongside the Master Builder of the Cathedral, Alfonso Jiménez Martín.

Unique features:

  • All research and replacement work was carried out without shoring the vaults and without affecting the cathedral's daily activities, services, visits, etc. An innovative banding and shoring system was used on the pillars, ensuring maximum safety whilst work was carried out.
  • An auscultation system was used throughout, this allowing the movements of and stress on the pillars, bands and shorings to be monitored. The columns were put into place with the help of jacks.
