Challenge
Residents of San Martín, who live in the Tocache province of Peru, have historically relied on rafts and boats to traverse the Huallaga River and reach neighbouring communities. This has adversely affected local agriculture, inflating costs and causing delays in trading staples such as coffee, cocoa, bananas, and papayas.
In 2021, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) commenced the construction of a bridge over the Huallaga River. The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) Peru awarded the construction supervision of the Huallaga Bridge project to Ayesa to help deliver this vital infrastructure safely, on time and within budget.
Our work
Ayesa is responsible for the supervision, execution and fulfillment of the contract to construct this vital infrastructure. Built over the Huallaga River, this bridge is integrated into the El Chorro–Tres Cruces–Sihuas–Huacrachuco–Uchiza–Emp road network. It will further enhance Route 5N, serving as a vital link between the jungle and the coast, as the route traverses the mountain ranges of Huánuco and Ancash.
The bridge features a double cable-stayed structure with a length of 407.8 meters and has two 3.30-meter lanes for vehicle traffic. It also includes 1.2-meter wide shoulders on both sides for pedestrian traffic and 342 meters of road access at both ends of the bridge. The central span has a length of 220.5 meters.
Added value
The new bridge will make travel quicker and safer for vehicles and pedestrians. This enhancement will significantly improve the quality of life for approximately 600,000 residents. They’ll be able to safely cross the river and more efficiently transport their goods, which could lead to better pricing for their agricultural products.
This bridge is part of the strategy of Provías Nacional to develop infrastructure that unites communities and improves travel with concession-free networks. The bridge will foster regional integration in the northeastern part of Peru, enhance the population’s quality of life and boost local commerce.
Ayesa’s supervision of the Huallaga Bridge adds significant value across multiple fronts. Their technical expertise ensures quality and safety, while their rigorous oversight minimizes risks like delays and budget overruns. Ayesa’s data-driven approach and comprehensive project view lead to optimized outcomes that benefit both the community and the project’s economic efficiency. Their familiarity with both local and international construction codes ensures the project will meet all regulatory requirements, avoiding potential legal complications and ensuring the bridge can be used as intended as soon as it’s completed. Ayesa provides a 360-degree view of the project, from initial concept to final construction. This comprehensive approach ensures that the bridge will not only be structurally sound but also optimized for the specific needs of the community and local traffic patterns.
