Ayesa Engineering to play a central role in the largest transformation in the history of Mexico City’s International Airport
The multinational will supervise the renovation of Terminals 1 and 2 under a contract valued at more than €5 million.
Over €100 million will be invested to enhance the airport’s capacity and safety ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ayesa Engineering is set to play a leading role in the most significant transformation ever undertaken at Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport (AICM). The Secretaría de Marina and the city’s Airport Group, administrators of the aerodrome, have awarded the company the contract for the supervision of the project and construction works across Terminals 1 and 2. The project aims to deliver modern, safer, and more accessible facilities ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Mexico will serve as a host nation alongside the United States and Canada.
During the tournament, AICM expects to receive over five million additional passengers between June and July 2026. To meet this surge in air traffic, more than €100 million has been allocated to a major modernization of the airport’s infrastructure. The works include the renovation of façades, interior and exterior lighting, walls, flooring, ceilings, and hydrosanitary systems, as well as maintenance of rooftops and electrical installations.

Ayesa will oversee all phases of the project—from planning through to commissioning—under a contract exceeding €5 million. This assignment positions the company as a key player in highly complex airport infrastructure projects. A team of more than 100 professionals will verify material and construction quality, monitor timelines and budgets, and ensure full compliance with occupational health and safety regulations. The company will also manage incident resolution and work to minimize the impact of the construction activities on airport operations.
The works are already underway and will be paused between 31 May and 31 July 2026 due to the FIFA World Cup. Activities will resume on 1 August and are scheduled to conclude on 17 December next year.
This project will enable AICM to meet the highest international standards for capacity, safety, and accessibility. Its sustainable approach and energy-efficiency criteria also position the airport to achieve green airport certification, supporting Mexico’s economic and tourism development.
According to José Antonio Tovar, project lead: “With this contract, Ayesa strengthens its expertise in specialized technical supervision and regulatory compliance. It also represents a major opportunity to reinforce our presence and visibility in a highly competitive and regulated sector, as well as in Mexico’s most strategic infrastructure projects”.
