Ayesa Digital extends the Electronic Prescription Service in the Basque Country to MUFACE

The COFPV improves patient access to treatments, providing greater convenience and efficiency in the dispensing of medicines.

With the incorporation of the Basque Autonomous Community, a total of 586,294 mutual society members across Spain can now access this service.

The electronic prescription system is now available to the 15,352 MUFACE members with contracted healthcare services in the Basque Country. This system, developed by Ayesa Digital for the Basque Country Pharmacists’ Association (COFPV), streamlines communication among all stakeholders involved in the healthcare process. It ensures prescription traceability, supports pharmacotherapeutic follow-up, and enhances the quality of care.

The rollout of this solution represents a major step toward the universal adoption of electronic prescriptions and improves patient access to treatment, offering greater convenience and faster pharmaceutical services. It also optimizes system management and, most importantly, strengthens patient safety in medication use by minimizing potential errors—critical aspects of the daily work carried out by community pharmacists.

The majority of MUFACE members with contracted healthcare are retirees—over 63% in the Basque Country—so the introduction of electronic prescriptions will further extend benefits to this group by avoiding unnecessary travel and helping to reduce the digital divide. Patients who will benefit most include those with chronic treatments, who will no longer need to repeatedly visit their doctor’s office. The system is not only available to MUFACE members residing in the Basque Country; any member traveling within Spain may use it, as it is fully interoperable across regions.

Its implementation has been made possible thanks to the joint technical efforts of physicians, pharmacists, MUFACE, and the contracted insurance providers Adeslas and ASISA, under the national coordination of the General Council of Pharmacists’ Associations.

15 regions and 586,294 MUFACE members

With the Basque Autonomous Community, electronic prescription services will be active by the end of this year in a total of fifteen territories: thirteen autonomous communities (Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Extremadura, Galicia, La Rioja, Murcia, Navarre, Castilla–La Mancha, the Community of Madrid, and the Basque Country) and two autonomous cities (Ceuta and Melilla).

With the addition of the Basque Country, a total of 586,294 MUFACE members nationwide can now use this system, which also ensures full interoperability of electronic prescriptions among all participating autonomous communities. Since the start of its regional deployment in 2020, 1,202,442 prescriptions and 3,021,864 dispensations have already been processed.

The rollout of the Integrated Electronic Prescription System of MUFACE (SIREM) will be completed in 2026 with the incorporation of Andalusia, Castile and León, Catalonia, and the Valencian Community.
