Mediterranean dual highway passing by Almuñecar
A strategic stretch
Granada, Spain
Opening: 28.07.2009
This project corresponds to the new Mediterranean dual highway route. N-340 highway of Cádiz and Gibraltar to Barcelona. The new stretch that runs between La Herradura and Taramay has a 9,1 kilometer distance and has a 240 million Euros investment.
Globally, it has eight viaducts, three inferior passages, and six tunnels. All of them have evacuation galleries, fire detection systems, video-surveillance and hazardous products leak controls in case of accidents.
The project’s complexity made it necessary to use advanced technical solutions involving land movement, with cuttings of up to 70 m in height and instrumentation embankments. In addition, with the viaducts, we have also used brand new constructive procedures in Spain. These procedures include the concrete arch execution with raised cables. In the 5.000 linear meters of tunnel executed, we have employed cutting-edge machinery for all the subterranean work.
With this project execution, we placed special interest in environmental protection and we made a great effort to keep the soil fertile and the fencing of the route to safeguard the protected species of the zones, as well as the landscape integration and planning of the project.
This new stretch is a variation to the Almuñécar crossing and will reduce traffic jams. It is a positive endeavor for the touristic development of Almuñécar and Costa Tropical.
